My name is Amrit, and I live in Eynsham (Oxfordshire, UK) with my partner Eve and our cat Astrid.
Interests
My interests include:
- Going for walks. One particular flavour of walk I enjoy is long, connected walks, usually making up my own routes between places I’d like to visit rather than using named paths; and usually done a day at a time on free weekend days here and there, rather than all consecutively. - Reading, especially science fiction and fantasy – see my Goodreads.
- Languages and linguistics, especially historical linguistics. I love guessing etymologies and seeing the connections between languages. I know a lot of languages poorly, and none other than English very well, though I could hold at least a somewhat halting conversation in about four. My (second) undergrad and masters were in the delightfully weird Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. Languages with which I’ve had some experience, ranging from some years of study to barely a 2-week fling, include French, Norwegian, Spanish, Latin, Punjabi, Icelandic, Old English, Old Irish, Medieval Welsh, Old Norse, Ancient Greek, German, Irish, Gothic, Arabic and Romanian.
- Learning fun information, getting into internet rabbit holes, etc.
- I’m rather an obsessive archiver of my own life, keeping detailed digital and physical records.
- Less so than in the past, but I’ve also been known to have a go at making clothes, making little electronic devices, and writing physical letters to my friends.
- And of course, I love a good spreadsheet!
Work & effective altruism
I’m active in the effective altruism (EA) space, a social movement and community focussed on using reason and evidence to find the most effective ways to help others. My work is all related to EA, and some things I post on the internet, especially on The Heart-Shaped Grape, relate to that or may make most sense in that context.
For my job, I currently lead operations – i.e. things like compliance, HR, finance, office management, etc. – at Forethought, a small, Oxford-based research nonprofit focussing on how humanity can successfully navigate explosive progress in artificial intelligence. Alongside my work with Forethought, I support a few other EA groups and organisations on a consulting or volunteer basis.
